Itinerary

After leaving Milan early in the morning and a comfortable two-hour drive by luxury minivan, you will reach the colorful village of Santa Margherita Ligure on the Tigullio Gulf.

The Tigullio Gulf sits east of Genoa in the northern Italian region of Liguria and is part of the Italian Riviera. In Santa Margherita Ligure the maritime scenery and turquoise sea blends beautifully with the green of the Ligurian hills.

Here you will take the ferry-boat for Portofino, and enjoy the memorable and scenic cruise for Portofino on crystalline green waters that are part of a Marine Protected Area and that reveal a myriad display of aquatic life.

Portofino is a charming fishing village, whose beauty has been narrated across the millennia by writers and poets such as Guy de Maupassant, and that has became known in the last decades as the resort of the rich and famous, a popular escape for celebrities.

Portofino’s Roman name (Portus Delphini) means Port of the Dolphin and reflects the large number of dolphins that inhabited the Tigullian Gulf, and that are still spotted there.

You will have time to visit Portofino’s centre, its famous promenade with harbor, shops, restaurants, cafes, luxury hotels, pastel-colored waterfront houses and the Castello Brown, a 16th-century castle overlooking the village.

Do not forget to visit the Faro (lighthouse) on the way to the Castle and to check the great views of Portofino and the Tigullio Gulf from the Castle.

In the afternoon, you will take the ferry back to Santa Margherita and continue for Genoa, where you will have time to explore the town and enjoy its art, gastronomy and architecture.

Genoa (known in Italian as Genova), is the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, and also the biggest medieval town in Europe.
Nicknamed “La Superba” (“Superb One”), due to its impressive landmarks, Genoa has an intriguing history.

It was in fact one of the “Maritime Republics,” along with Venice, Pisa, and Amalfi, and its role in maritime history is beyond compare.
Its ornate buildings and monuments reveal the richness of its history, of its trades and of its shipbuilding tradition.

Genoa’s countless landmarks include the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town (since 2006), where you can get lost in a labyrinth of narrow alleyways, San Lorenzo Cathedral, Piazza de Ferrari, the Palace of the Doges and Royal Palace.

While Genoa still maintains the charm of the ancient maritime republic, it’s also been deeply renovated in the last 20 years.

The Ancient Harbour, renovated in 1992 by the architect Renzo Piano, hosts one of the biggest Acquarium in Europe, the iconic Lanterna (the lighthouse) and the scenic panoramic lift with 360° views on the town, the harbor and the sea.

The journey ends with the return to Milan.
